Tribal Nail Designs

Some designs I created playing with colours, patterns and nail jewellery... Here are just a few ideas which I may use for my editorial look (the ones with more detail) and the simpler ones for my catwalk look. The designs were based on the textiles which I had seen throughout my tribal research with the patterns and colours which they wear.

Here are some tribal nail designs I found which I really like. Some have been posted on blogs, makeup pages and also the 'Nail Rock' collection which is sold in many highstreet shops such as topshop and new look.
These design reference tribal colours and patterns from textiles and body painting. I am going to be creating my own nail designs to incorporate into both my catwalk and editorial look.
My catwalk look will be more simple and probably just include a couple of colours or one bold colour where as with my editorial nail designing I will use assessories such as jewellery, patterns and sick on shapes and beads.
Hand DesigningI could also link my nails to the sleeves which I am creating for my editorial look. With the designs shown previously on the other posts I could connect the sleeve to the nails and their design...
Below are a couple of designs which I could use in both my editorial and catwalk look. The lines on the fingers could mimic the wrinkles with the knuckles and also symbolise the ear stretches and jewellery which tribal men and women wear.
I could colour these in gold to represent the jewellery or the black to match with the full sleeve.

The Perfect Skin

In my images I want to portray the perfect glossy skin which I have seen be presented within the tribes and the looks which I have found throughout my research. I want my models skin to be perfect, glowing and healthy looking and rather than wearing any items of clothings such as a dress or a top.
I want to highlight the body in its natural form referencing the tribes I have researched.

My models skin for both my editorial look and catwalk look will need to look glossy, healthy and beautiful. These two products by Illamasqua will be perfect! I'm currently bidding on the golden brown colour (Pulse) on ebay... It finishes tomorrow so fingers crossed I will win it because I cannot find this ANYWHERE!!

Airbrushing would be a good technique to look into although it may take a lot of time, esspecially for my catwalk look... On the other hand I could use products such as MACs face and body foundation which makes the skin glow and look flawless without making it obvious that you are wearing an enhancing product.
Highlighter will be a very large part of the look also making the models look healthy and glowing. I will find some products which I think may be appropriate and do some tests.

Face Charts

I decided to do a few face charts last night and combine some of the drawings and sketches I have done recently to create some catwalk looks. These are only a couple of ideas which I have in mind at the moment. I'm just developing some designs, taking out aspects of each and creating a new looks. Enjoy!

This first idea is a catwalk look for a man. I will use a bold black earing which appears to be an ear stretch. I added a couple of black cicles along the jaw line and a black triangle onto the chin which references tribal face and body art. The eyebrows will be darkened and made to look wild representing the naturalistic side of tribal life. This will also contrast again the structured sides of the head. I create a strong point in the hair line at the cheek bone giving the look a hard edge.
The skin will be flawless and dewy and the contouring will emphasise the manly but beautiful look of a tribal chief or warrior. I love the idea of having a nose stretch all the way through therefore I create my own and use dup glue to sitck to either side of the models nose.
The hair will be a hair piece which I will have previously created which contrasts again the models natural/current hair colour referencing the feathered head pieces which the man wear.

Catwalk Hair ideas

I found this painting in the British Portrait Museum in London yesterday and it made me start thinking about some ideas for hair design. I'm going to draw up some ideas and see how they turn out. I love the white feather going down the centre of the head scarf and I'm wanting to incorporate that onto a hair design which portrays beauty but has a strong quirky tribal edge to it...

I drew this image including a plait from the back of the hair to the front and feathered and curled hair at the front of the face to reference tribal head pieces and to reverse the appearance of the image above.
All of the other images below have been created by playing around with plaits and big back combed sections of hair across the middle section of the head whether it is in front of the face or going along the back of the head towards the neck. I have shown different colours and textures which I could play with using coloured hair sprays, fabrics and other materials to create different looks.

During my practical lesson, I decided to play around with simple but effective hair styles which could be useful to take into consideration when choosing specific hair designs for my catwalk look.
This one in particular is using a hair sausage to create a large bun on the top of the head referencing the tribal women and men who carry items on their heads or who wear colourful and high head scarfs. Like the example below...

This was the second hair style I chose to try out which mirrors my previous drawings of the hair falling down the center of the head and instead of being wild and curly, it is tamed and rapped around a hair sausage to secture it and give it a structure.

Hair Styling with Tribal References

David Koma | Spring 2012

Strong partings through out the hair, slicked back into a pony tail. The partings in the hair look very bold and straight.

This could be a good inspiration for my hair styling ideas for my tribal look as it relates back to the sticked back hair which some tribes do wear to emphasise their jewellery, piercings and body paint. The partings could go down the back of the hair and turn into braids and plaits. I could incorporate beads and textures such as fabrics and different added hair pieces.

John Paul Gaultier | Spring 2010

Really love this natural, simple and beautiful look. A center parting with two long plaits on either side of the face. If I wanted to include colour I could use a hair paint or spray on one of the sections of the plait so the colour runs all the way through it.

Katy Perry | Extraterrestrial Music Video

The layers and the colours of the hair references the head pieces which both tribal men and woman use. The colour of the hair piece which Katy Perry is wearing could reference the hair colours and the body paints which tribes use to decorate their bodies. Similarly, the braids along the front of the hair line contrast against the colour of the rest of her hair.
This video is obviously is more alien styling but aspects of her image in this particular shot shows links with tribal styling such as the hair and the face decoration.

Tribal References in Catwalk Hair&Makeup

Hello Beyonce! House of Deréon at Selfridges
By a complete accident I stummbled across this on youtube whilst watching beyonces music videos.
There is a woman at 4 minutes and 12 seconds who has the most amazing hair. It's jet black, boldly cut into almost a bowl cut shape, wearing a gold headband with a couple of HUGE feathers on it. The models wear a bold statement lip and very bold eyebrows, flawless skin and a contoured face.
What I like about this show is that most of the tribal inspired catwalk shows (with the hair and makeup) are very samey and repetitive whereas this one in particular (esspecially with the hair styling) is quite varied.

The model at 4 minutes 30 is wearing a tied and braided head scarf around her head with it draping down one side of her body. I have been thinking about incorporating a big thick plait with some fabrics running through it... In my drawings earlier, most of my girl models have had either a huge long plait or a head piece on made of feathers. I'm now thinking if I could skip on the head piece for my catwalk and just include fabrics or beads to create textures through the models hair instead.

Eric Tibusch Spring 2011 | Paris Couture Fashion Week

I think this catwalk is stunning. The hair in particular, with the hair colours and paint which aren't just restricted to the hair line but blend into the face. Even though the hair isn't coventional and pretty, the combination of all the styling as a whole looks stunning. I love the girls hair at 3 minutes and 39 seconds which looks animal like with a horn shape woven inside her hair pieces. The colour and texture is similar to the one which I have shown on my previous post of the Namibia Tribe but it more golden bronze.
This is one of my favourite catwalks for hair I have seen throughout my research for this project.

Louise Gray | Fall Winter 2012/2013 Fashion Show
I am going to be honest, I think this show with clothes, hair and makeup as a whole is awful. I'm sorry! I love the hair alone! I think it looks incredible with the white on top of the head and the shaved or slicked back sides.
I also like the statement cheeks but it's far too clashy clash for me. I think the whole catwalk look looks very messy and TOO over the top which is what I am aiming to steer clear from.
Although I have to admit, all of the hair designs and head pieces are amazing on the catwalk, essecially the fan-like head pieces. I noticed that all of the hair on all the models was scraped back into a high pony tail away from the face and that gave it a very hard edge which I liked.

I have a head ache after watching this three times...

2011 F/W Qasimi

THIS EXCITES ME! This was one of the ideas I was thinking of for my catwalk look too but I was thinking more on the cheeks rather than the forehead. All of the models look gorgoeous, and the hair is beautiful. It's so simple but the hairbands and styling of it creates the appearance of a tribal head peace without the fuss of having to wear one...

The black on this models skin looks amazing, so contrasting and bold. The hair looks textured and fun and references the hair styles which I have referenced on earlier posts, it has been modernised.

At first when I saw the white it didn't stike me as much as the black because it wasn't as bold as the black, however I think this design and the white compliments his hair colour and the clothes he is wearing. I think if it was a black pattern, it would look too dramatic and catch your eye before you even looked at the clothes.
After seeing this catwalk, it's given me a clearer idea of what I should be doing for my look. Not the styling and makeup of course, but even the most simplistic looks with hair can be perfect for the catwalk.

Alexander Mcqueen Fall 2000 -2001

So in my lecture this morning, my tutor showed us a video of Alexander McQueen's Fall/Winter 2000-2001 show in Paris. It's got my thinking more about my catwalk look and how I am going to create my look... I feel sorry for the models having to walk along that floor in heels!
But the whole catwalk is gorgeous; all the prints, colours and textures. The hair looks amazing with the gold/yellow hair paint in the center of their hair going down onto their forehead and face.

This is SO scary! Esspecially walking on that floor!!! But I love how different and shocking this look is for the catwalk. It's so dangerous but looks fabulous. Those earing are class and the combination of hair and makeup against the clothing and the styling really compliment each other.

The beautiful fabrics used in his collection. It's almost a gothic tribal look...

Linking back to the neck stretch which I included in my blog earlier, and the nose piercing.

Drawing Addiction!

Oh I almost forgot, I did a couple more drawings tonight whilst watching The Hills. I think I'm becoming slightly addicted to drawing again because of this project. I haven't drawn like this since my Art a-level over a year ago!
My obsession with tribal jewellery continues!
Enjoy x

Face Chart and Hair Testing

Both of these face charts are practically the same however I wanted to start out without the nose bar... I think she's looks very 'Lara Croft' which ISN'T the look I'm going for.

The skill will be flawless, really dewy and natural with a strongly contoured face (cheeks and nose), with subtle highlighting of the cheekbones. I also thought about darkening around the eyes slightly with a light brown shadow giving the look more of an edge.
The eyebrows will be dark if not the same colour as the hair and will be pointed looking tame but wild giving the look a strong edge. Again, I like to focus on the hair and accessories.

Within my tutorials at uni, I test out and try different techniques and products to see how they work and which ones I like.
Below is an example of fullersearth... a power which when mixed with water creates a grey paste which can be applied to the hair (as shown below).

I'm sorry the picture and the dolls head is REALLY bad, but I tested out my plaits and what it would look like with fullersearth on top of it however I found it to be too clumpy and the look I had drawn above would look better with the hair not looking dirty but look sleek.

On the dolls head, I back combed all the the back of the hair and scraped the front section back. I have also applied fullersearth onto the hair to make it stiffer and mucky looking. I painted over this in a brown aqua colour from my Kryolan palette. I loved how easy it was to apply a colour onto the hair when using this product. This may be a possibily for one of my looks...

This week coming I will be doing some tests trying out a couple of different looks and aspects of looks which I am thinking of using for my final looks.
But for now, it's 1.22am and I am absolutely shattered! I have a hen party tomorrow night which I'm doing hair and makeup for and then the same for her wedding on the sunday so I have an exciting weekend ahead. Wish me luck! x

Alternative Hair show 2012

I saw some images posted on twitter about the alternative hair show this year and these two styles in particular inspired me on my hair ideas for my tribal photoshoots...
Obviously the huge hair piece at the top represents the head scarfs and hats which the tribes wear. (Also the body paint)
The bottom image it beautiful, I love the hair covering the face in those perfect french plaits... This in my project would make the hair the main statement. Instead of the two big side parts of the hair I could create a look where the rest of the hair is scraped away from the face and there is just two or three french plait covering the face.
I'm going to create a face chart right now!

Tribal Fashion Illustration

I decided to draw up a few ideas of the body art and piercings and jewellry to include into my editorial shoot.
The top image is one showing a head piece which I could make out of feathers and a headband. I also included a nose piercing that goes all the way through the nose. I could use duo glue and stick two separate wooden sticks and attack it to each side of the nose. Rather than just use a plain wooden stick, I could decorate it and paint in different colours. I also chose to include both ears full of earings because my main focus at the moment is on body art and body modification. I also included a strong green nail colour which can represent the earth and nature.

The Karo men are well known for their full body painting. I think the white against his dark skin and the dots on his face look beautiful. I could use a white liner to highlight the black tribal design in some places.

Above is an image I found on google images which I felt I had to include just because of the rib marks and the link between my design and their designs.
The second image I decided to try out was one with a big hair style. Here I could encorporate the tribal plaiting and braiding and possibly include beads and pieces of fabrics and textiles which I could weave into the hair.

These two images create the same idea but one is the full look and the other is focusing on the facial makeup. I decided I could create my own tribal body paint onto a fabric and wrap it around my model. I also created a head piece which is fabric plaited and braided together using multicolours. Most of my ideas recently have been very black and white whereas now I decided to create a look which was more colourful. I will use my fingers to spead colour over the face giving it a real tribal feel. this idea also focuses more on textures and textiles, not only with the material used but with the textures and layers I will create on the face with makeup and body paint.
This final look encorporates the look of a neck stretch. I also made the hair into an updo which symbolises the head pieces and head scarfs which some of the tribes I have researched wear. There is also a small black headband on her hair line with two feather attatched on either side. The lips will be black symbolising the henna tattoo which some cultures and tribes like to tattoo onto their gums and mouth. This idea is simpler than the other ones above therefore could be used for a catwalk look...
Moving onto male models... I love the idea that men make such an effort to be more attractive for the women. I love this idea I drew and think the combination of jewellry, accessories and piercings against the body paint would look beautiful. I like the idea of using a male model... Hmm ;)
Experimenting with hair makeup, clothing and accessories!
